Composition and Scientific Information

There are several longer chain or derived omega 3 fatty acids are formed from alpha-linolenic acid.   These are of marine origin.  They are mainly found in fish, fish oils and from other marine organisms. There are 3 principal marine omega 3 fatty acids are eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), docosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).

DHA is specifically localized in the retina and the brain in humans and other mammals which is great medical interest.   There is a difference in the longer chain versus the non longer chain omega 3 fatty acids.   The long chain omega 3's are rapidly incorporated into cell membrane phospholipids.   It is here were they effect metabolic pathways and hence metabolism.

They alter the permeability and flow of fluids of the cell wall membranes, cell signals, enzymes effected by cells and the cell membranes, regulation of gene expression, and the production of  eicosanoids.

Alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) is the parent fatty acid in the omega 3 fatty acid family.  It is a very important essential fatty acid.   It is present in plant oils, such as flaxseed oil, walnut oil and canola oil.  The long chain ALA's on the other hand are found in marine origins such as the green lipped mussel of New Zealand.  The oil derived from the New Zealand Green Lipped Mussel is different from other oils rich in omega 3 fatty acids such as  flaxseed oil and tuna oil.


Clinical summaries and scientific information

  • No blocking of "good guy" COX 1 by ETA (GREEN MUSSEL), only blocks the harmful effects of the COX 2 and other harmful inflammatory pathways.
  • One important component of the green mussel is the recently discovered ETA (Eicosatetraenoic Acids). These  are in the Omega 3 family of good lipids, and similar in structure to Omega 6.

The main lipids in New Zealand Green Lipped Mussel consist of sterol esters, triglycerides, free fatty acids, sterols and phospholipids.   Triglycerides are  the main lipids in land origin fats such as flaxseed oil, walnut oil and canola oil.

The main omega  fatty acids in New Zealand Green Lipped Mussel are EPA and DHA.  In the plant based fats like flaxseed oil and tuna oil the main omega 3 fatty acids are ALA and DHA, respectively.

The main sterols in New Zealand Green Lipped Mussel  were cholesterol and desmosterol and brassicasterol, while in flaxseed oil and tuna oil the main sterols were beta-sitosterol and cholesterol.

Research studies show the benefits from the ingestion of the omega 3 polyunsaturated fatty acids are better than the fats that kill.   The difference is the anti-oxidant, the anti-inflammatory, and nutritional value of these good guy fats from the ocean rather than the land animal saturated fats or the chemically altered trans fats.

The harvesting and Growing of Sea Buckthorn
Sea Buckthorn is undemanding, cold resistant plant, which can grow into the beautiful bush or tree depending of the soil, climate and watering. The plant will reward the grower with nature made multivitamins at the age of about 5 years.

Sea Buckthorn berries are clustered on the branch like shiny orange gems. They will remain on the branch all winter extending the harvesting period in colder regions.

Oil from Sea Buckthorn berry is a deep red color due to its high carotene content which includes valuable lycopene. Fruit Oil is the most potent source of palmitoleic acid (C16:1) with values as high as 34%. This fatty acid supports cellular regeneration as a component of the skin fat and creates a silky soft and smooth feeling to the skin.

In addition, it contains carotenoids, tocopherols and phytosterols. Among the carotenes found in Sea Buckthorn are alpha - and beta - carotene, lycopene, cryptoxanthin, zeaxanthin, taraxanthin and phytofluin. Its low peroxide value makes it a very stable oil.

Sea Buckthorn fruit oil also contains flavonoids, omega 3 and 6, DHA and numerous trace elements. The oil is a valuable ingredient in topical applications as well as nutraceutical formulations. It has long been used to promote the healing of burns and is an ingredient in several commercial sunscreen and cosmetic products.

Berries of Sea Buckthorn are one of the best known natural sources of vitamins A, C, E, carotenes, and are rich in several B vitamins, EFA's, flavonoids, etc. Both male and female plants are required to have the berries. The fruit is high in Effaces and other rare lipids, amino acids and a vitamin C concentration higher than that found in oranges or even kiwi. The Buckthorn berry contains 8 vitamins, 24 minerals, and 18 amino acids.

There are Anti-oxidant and immunomodulatory properties of seabuckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides)--an in vitro study by Geetha, et al. at the Defence Institute of Physiology and Allied Sciences in India.

This study  showed anti-oxidant and immunomodulat ory properties of seabuckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides) in its ability to repair and respond to oxidative damage by free radicals that  were used in the study.  The study also showed other possible benefits of seabuckthorn  to inhibit chromium-induced free radical production, apoptosis, DNA fragmentation and restored the anti-oxidant status to that of control cells. In addition, these extracts also were able to arrest the chromium-induced inhibition of lymphocyte proliferation. These observations suggest that the alcoholic extracts of leaves and fruits of seabuckthorn have marked cytoprotective properties, which could be attributed to the anti-oxidant activity.
